Dr. Philippa
Ryan

Dr. Philippa Ryan is a barrister and lecturer in the Faculty of Law at UTS. Her area of expertise is commercial equity and legal issues thrown up by disruptive technologies. Her doctoral thesis reclassified the liability of third parties to a breach of trust. Her current research explores the fiduciary obligations, agency, jurisdiction and tracing in distributed ledger transactions and smart contracts, enabled by Blockchain technology. Pip teaches Civil Practice and she designed and coordinates a Commercial Equity elective that examines directors’ duties, Ponzi schemes and the trust as an alternative to a corporate arrangement. She recently designed a new post-graduate subject: Disruptive Technologies and the Law. She is a founding member of the UTS Blockchain Creative Clusters and she also convenes an online Blockchain law study group for academics, legal professionals and Blockchain developers. Pip teaches on the NSW Bar Practice Course and she mentors female law students from UTS, Sydney University, and Macquarie University.
